In the vast world of fishing, the options for cast nets are as plentiful as the fish in the sea. When I hit the lake in search of catfish, live bait is always the way to go. And because I'm a bit frugal, I prefer to catch my own bait with a cast net rather than splurging at a bait shop (no offense to the bait shops out there).
Cast nets come in a variety of types and sizes. Small cast nets, typically 4-6 feet in diameter, are perfect for snagging small bait in shallow waters. Medium cast nets, ranging from 7-9 feet, are the versatile workhorses of the bunch. If you're fishing in deeper waters, opt for a large net around 9-10 feet, but be prepared to show off your throwing skills.
When shopping for a cast net, pay attention to the weight. Remember, the heavier the weight, the quicker the net will sink. Material matters too - I personally prefer nylon over monofilament. And don't forget about the lead line; a well-constructed lead line ensures that your cast net opens like a dream.
I'm still honing my cast net throwing skills, but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day. There are plenty of videos out there to help you perfect your technique.
